With its aim of ‘championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music’ Chineke! offers brilliant and inclusive performances for the 21st century. Their programme includes the fabulous Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin as well as timeless songs from Porgy and Bess.
Chineke! bring their spirited and stylish approach to performing the great classics to this concert.
The orchestra gave its first concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2015 and, now an Associate Orchestra at Southbank Centre, returns with a popular programme conducted by Wayne Marshall with pianist, Stewart Goodyear.
Chineke! Orchestra is Europe's first orchestra to feature a majority of black and minority ethnic musicians. It has performed throughout the UK and abroad to great acclaim and continues to fulfill its mission to champion change and celebrate diversity in classical music
Having opened the last Birmingham Classical season, Chineke! make a welcome return as the final orchestra to perform in this season. With Wayne Marshall at their helm, Chineke! bring their joy and energy to Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Dvořák’s dramatic Seventh Symphony.
Chineke! is the brainchild of Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, who says, ‘My aim is to create a space where black minority and ethnic musicians can walk on stage and know that they belong.’ For this afternoon concert, Wayne Marshall conducts an attractively lyrical work by neglected black composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a lively new work by American pianist Stewart Goodyear and a stalwart symphony, Dvorák’s magnificent Seventh.
Don’t miss Chineke! Orchestra perform the reopening concert of Queen Elizabeth Hall. The orchestra’s debut concert was one of the last in Queen Elizabeth Hall before it closed for refurbishment in September 2015, so it’s only fitting they are now part of the building’s rebirth.
